PageRank (PR) is an algorithm used by Google Search to rank websites in their search engine results. PageRank was named after Larry Page, one of the founders of Google. PageRank is a way of measuring the importance of website pages.
According to Google: PageRank works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. The underlying assumption is that more important websites are likely to receive more links from other websites.
PR is expressed as a single digit number, from 0 to 9, with 0 being the lowest. Google itself is a 9.
To find out what your PR is now, get this PageRank Extension for Chrome browsers. For IE browsers use this Toolbar. For Firefox browsers use this Addon.
WARNING! There are “black hat” methods of gaining thousands of links overnight, at minimal cost and time. Google has recently been issuing severe penalties to sites using such tactics. Beware. Be smart.
Here are some of the most effective methods of improving your PageRank, without risking any penalties from Google.
1. Existing Listings. Find listings of your company in Google that have no links to your website. Without a link back to your site, Google will not count the listing as a “vote of confidence”. Some listings will provide a way to add a link online, and others you may have to contact to get the link added. To locate these listings, just use Google and search for your company name. Go deep and check each one out.
2. Discounts. Offer discounts to certain groups. Everyone loves a good deal and clubs and organizations love to promote such benefits to their members. Offering a discount to a club or organization is a great way of receiving a link to your website, with little effort.
3. Testimonials. Most companies rely on other businesses to supply products and services. Brainstorm a list of all the businesses that you use and recommend. Then offer to provide these businesses with testimonials. Often companies will have a dedicated page on their website for testimonials. Usually the company will jump at the chance to receive a testimonial from a satisfied customer and will be more than happy to link back to your website. This technique is a win-win for both websites and helps cultivate a good relationship with your suppliers.
4. Donations. Often charities will list their donors and benefactors on their website. If there is a relevant charity your business can donate to, asked to be listed on this page with a link back to your website.
In each of the above cases, keep this in mind. Google will read not only the link to your site, but all the text near it. Having keywords (relavant to your business) before and/or after the link will give each such listing more “horsepower” from Google’s viewpoint. Here’s an example;
