Profit Gate History: 19 Years In Business

Profit Gate was established September 17, 1999 in Dunedin, Florida – 19 years ago today. Here’s a brief summary of it’s history: 1999 – 2000: Working out of their home, Dan Lewis and his three partners began building websites for local companies. Some of their design clients used Profit Gate’s marketing service to get top rankings in the search engines. Nearly all of those clients were quite successful with this online marketing. Back then, Yahoo was the #1 search engine and there were ten top engines competing for public searches. 2001: Profit Gate added Hosting and Domain Names to its services. This created a totally complete service, including buying a domain name, hosting it online, building the website, getting the site highly ranked in the search engines – all in one company. It grew very fast. 2004 – 2009: Profit Gate had an in house staff of 7 and was located next to the Largo Post Office. The office had about 3000 square feet, a kitchen, 3 bathrooms, and wall to…

Web Marketing Trends for 2017

If you want to stay competitive in 2017, you may want to pay attention to these trends. I remember back in 1999, a lot of business owners considered getting a website was a waste of money – since “the Internet is just a fad“. Me, I looked at the growth statistics and knew what was coming. That’s when I started Profit Gate. Web Designs For Mobile Devices The use of Mobile (mostly smart phones) will continue its growth in 2017. Not only do companies need mobile-friendly websites, the sites need to cater to those on the move. That means creating web pages that are “friendly” on a very small screen. With over half of all web traffic now done on smart phones, your company needs to ensure its website is easy to read and navigate on these small screens. Website Videos Will Become Vital It should be a no-brainer that video will soon dominate the web. After all, we all love videos and prefer them…

Google’s Latest Update: Possum!

Part of marketing your company website is being aware of major changes in how Google works. The latest in Google’s “Zoo” of recent updates to its algorithm was nicknamed “Possum” by Phil Rozek, a well-known SEO guru. You see, many business owners think they lost their “Google My Business” listing, but actually, they are just “playing possum” (being filtered out by Google). It appears that this update focuses on Google’s Local or Map results. It seems to have diversified results and reduced spam rankings. Overall, it has affected an estimated 64% of local search results. With some companies, this change in the Local Search results is critical to their web marketing. If your business focuses on local sales, it’s important to keep your Google rankings for your keywords on page one. Here is a short recap of Google’s changes so far this decade: Feb 2011 – Panda Update Apr 2012 – Penguin Update Sep 2013 – Hummingbird update Jul 2014 – Pigeon Update Apr 2015…

How Do Web Videos Affect Web Site Results?

How do web videos affect web site results? Here’s the short answer – One or more professional videos added to a web site can: improve web site rankings in Google improve the conversion of visits to sales improve your company’s public image give your company an edge over competitors that have no videos help your company keep up with competitors that do have videos But only if the video is done correctly will the above happen. Like most aspects of the web, there is more to this than meets the eye. Putting a low-quality, amateur video on a site can actually work against a company. This goes for both rankings and conversions. Factors of videos that Google considers in its rankings are; load time must be quick (how fast it downloads) meta tags tell Google more about the videos (duration, topic, video type, etc.) public responses (number of views, likes, and comments) Of course, the whole point of a video is to improve sales by…

What is SEO?

When you ask some people, “What is SEO?”, they say, “Oh, that’s Search Engine Optimization.” OK, but what does that actually mean? There are many ways to explain it, and some are really not much help. Some people may even think that I have some sort of ‘magic wand’ that I wave over a website and – poof! It’s number one on Google! I ran across this great little video that explains SEO basics in about three minutes. It’s simple – yet covers all the fundamentals. Watch Video Here The video was put together by Search Engine Land, a leading daily publication that covers all aspects of the search marketing industry. I think this video shows enough that most will understand now – when it comes to SEO and getting good rankings in Google, there are no magic wands, just hard work.

Latest Google Update: Pigeon

On July 24, 2014 Google launched the Pigeon Update, the biggest change to Google’s “Local Search” since 2012. Reports are finally coming out now as to what effects this has caused. Local Search is important to companies that serve mainly local customers. Google knows when it’s appropriate for searchers to see listings that are close by. Searches for things that are not area sensitive, such as electronics or books, do not have local listings in the results page. But if you are searching for a dentist or a pizza, then Google will automatically show results that are close to you; that’s Local Search. The Pigeon Update affected only Local Search listings. So far, reports indicate that local directories are being given far more preference in the organic listings. The 7 listings that are tied to the Google Map, which are displayed on page-one of the SERP (search engine results page), were impacted by this update. Those companies that had a good presence in the local directories, like…
